ODBC question

We are interested in buying ODBC for ---database (not decided yet) to do some
analysis on the digital recorder data. so my question is which Database
do you suggest for our puspose?? why??
and does ODBC help in retrieving data in terms of speed??
I know I am not making things clear here...but if someone can help me on my decision and confusion about this I appreciate it.
