It doesn't just have that reputation, it IS a non-commercial O/S. ;)
: Unlikely perhaps but not totally nonexistent. Already two vendors of
: commercial databases are offering free no-commercial-use versions of
: their software for use by developers on Linux. They are Jbase and Pick
: Systems. Also O/S 2 Warp is available free to developers. And Novell
: UnixWare is available free to developers.
: Even a not free version of Oracle would be nice. Then we can avoid
: SCO Unix.
If there were a not-free version of Oracle for Linux, I would strongly encourage my boss to buy at the least the client programs. I don't want to bog my machine down by running Oracle server, but SQL*Plus/Pro*C and SQL*NET would be nice.
Also, I know of a company planning to start an internet service provider on Linux boxes, and they would LOVE to be able to run their accounting/ billing on Oracle.
: Others who would find Oracle for Linux useful should speak up.
We support Oracle on HP/UX, and AIX, and run it on Solaris 2.4 in-house. I would love to be able to do my support work under Linux full-time, instead of re-booting to WinDon't all the time.
