The .sl means shared libraries whereas the .a is an archive library. On our workstations we have the archive versions as well as the .sl versions.
You can get the libX11.a and associated librarys from a number of
sites,
for HP specific try http://support.mayfield.hp.com/
or for the source try the X Consortium
