SQLPLus Under V6 and V7

When we do "set timing on" in SQLPLUS script in a V6 database, we got "real XXX.XX", but under V7.1.3 database, we got "Elapsed HH:MM:SS".
Is there a change in the way this statistics reported for a V6 and V7 database?
