long columns in triggers

It seems to be impossible to use long columns in a trigger
(in Oracle 7.0.x).
During an update I have to store some of the old table values in a history
table. For all other tables i am using the before update trigger, but it is
impossible for tables with LONG column.
Is there a workaround for this problem?
