From my personal experience with both products:
Oracle:
- Stabilized Product (Oracle 7 after release 13, recommended 7.0.16.4)
- Some bugs but usually you can find a way around it.
- Very good performance, but requires a lot of CPU (don't try to save on hardware)
- Poor support (worse in US then in Canada).
- Better functionality but more complex then Sybase.
- Better tools - like sqlloader to load data.
Sybase:
- Still some problems with version 10.
- Less complex then Oracle, but if something doesn't work forget it.
- Very good performance for smaller hosts (can survive with less of CPU)
- Better support, but they cannot solve problems related to basic bugs.
- Requires writing more programs in C, if the tool (like loader) cannot handle it.
If you would like more details send me mail please.
