From my personal experience with both products:

Oracle:

  • Stabilized Product (Oracle 7 after release 13, recommended 7.0.16.4)
  • Some bugs but usually you can find a way around it.
  • Very good performance, but requires a lot of CPU (don't try to save on hardware)
  • Poor support (worse in US then in Canada).
  • Better functionality but more complex then Sybase.
  • Better tools - like sqlloader to load data.

Sybase:

  • Still some problems with version 10.
  • Less complex then Oracle, but if something doesn't work forget it.
  • Very good performance for smaller hosts (can survive with less of CPU)
  • Better support, but they cannot solve problems related to basic bugs.
  • Requires writing more programs in C, if the tool (like loader) cannot handle it.

If you would like more details send me mail please.
