For SQL*Net v1 both the client and the server must share a protocol. Thus you must run TCP/IP and IPX/SPX on all your client PC's OR you can have both protocols running on the Sun Server.

With SQL*Net v2 this is no longer a requirement. As long as you have one additional box on the network that runs dual protocols with an interchange, the SPX packets can be translated to TCP packets on this machine. Thus both the client and the server can run only 1 protocol each.
