ORACLEWARE SYSTEM - UNIXWARE EDITION BREAKS PERFORMANCE RECORD OracleWare System - UnixWare Edition on Compaq Workstation Provides Customers with Best Price/Performance Rightsizing Platform for Mission Critical Needs

SAN JOSE, California --April 14, 1994-- In conjunction with today's announcement from Novell and Oracle that OracleWare System - UnixWare Edition 1.0 is shipping, Novell announced that OracleWare System - UnixWare Edition on a Compaq Proliant 2000, has established a world record for the best price/performance on the Transaction Performance Council's TPC-B benchmark. Clearly demonstrating its value as the most cost-effective transaction processing platform for bringing enterpriselevel  applications to a distributed environment, OracleWare System - UnixWare Edition came in at $432.55 per transaction per second (TPS).

Today's announcement demonstrates the power and advantage of the Oracle7 database management system and Novell's UnixWare operating system platform as the most efficient platform for rightsizing. The TPC-B benchmark is an industry-standard benchmark which tests the limits of both software and hardware performance. In addition to establishing performance parameters, the benchmark requires tested systems to demonstrate a very high degree of reliability and recoverability from system failure. This level of reliability and availability is crucial to using these solutions in a business-critical environment. OracleWare System - UnixWare Edition running on a Compaq Proliant 2000 Model 5/66 based on Intel's 66Mhz Pentium processor, benchmarked at an outstanding 184.54 tpsB. This mark represents the highest result ever achieved for an Intel-based, single-processor system and is competitive with much higher priced RISC-based servers.

"OracleWare System - UnixWare Edition is the most comprehensive offering
on the market. This is real client server computing for the masses," said Phil Lawlor, President of APEX Technologies. "Coupling Novell's UNIX with the Oracle7 database and tools offers our customers the most robust client server computing environment I have seen to date. This stuff plugs right into the network without a lot of hassle. The price performance ratio will leave the others gasping for breath trying to catch up."

"The Oracle/UnixWare/Compaq combination is an excellent example of the
outstanding server performance users now have available to them based on the Pentium processor." said John McNulty, Director of Enterprise Programs at Intel Corporation. "OracleWare System - UnixWare Edition is a powerful solution for enterprise customers rightsizing on Intel architectures."

The unprecedented results of this audited benchmark dramatically demonstrate UnixWare's ability to unleash the performance of industry standard hardware systems. The benchmark standard set today by Novell and Oracle on the Compaq platform is a direct result of the cooperation all three vendors have committed to delivering cost-efficient, powerful solutions for enterprise computing. In OracleWare System - UnixWare Edition, Novell and Oracle have teamed up to design and deliver a product based on the leading database platform in the market and the open, standards-based UnixWare operating environment.

"The combination of Compaq hardware and Oracle and Novell software has
broken the world record for price/performance," said John Paul, Vice President, Systems Software, Compaq Computer Corporation. "These outstanding results should give our customers confidence that they can achieve exceptional performance with UnixWare 1.1 on Compaq servers."

OracleWare brings together the industry's preeminent application services, networking, and information management products into a single, integrated network computing solution that is easy and convenient to purchase, install, manage, and support. Products in the OracleWare family integrate Novell's NetWare or UnixWare operating system with the Oracle7 cooperative server database, Oracle Office, Oracle Book, SQL*NET and Oracle Glue. Oracle Office is a client-server messaging and scheduling system, while Oracle Glue provides easy connections between Oracle serverbased  information and a broad range of front-end tools. An integrated installation program allows all server components of these products to be installed quickly and easily.

Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVL) is an information system software company, developer of network services, specialized and general purpose operating system products, and application programming tools. The networks Novell serves span from small businesses, to major enterprise system environments, to internetworks. Through its merger with WordPerfect, expected to be completed in mid-summer, Novell intends to take a leadership role in developing networked applications. Novell's NetWare, UnixWare, and AppWare families of products provide matched system components for rightsizing information systems within multivendor network computing environments.
