Distributed joins across v.6 and v.7 ??

We have Oracle v.6 running on a Pyramid UNIX box, and will have
v.7 running on a SCO UNIX pentium.
Does anyone have any experience with joins across the different
versions of Oracle (much less the different platforms, tho Im told
SQL*NET handles that). Is this even doable, and if so is there a
big performance penalty?
