You should be able to use Excel and Access against it. I am using Excel version 5, MS-Access, and several other tools like Forest & Trees against an Oracle 7 DBMS on an HP-UX machine.

You will need SQL*net (both on the server and the clients) to accomplish this even with the Microsoft ODBC drivers as they just sit on top of the SQL*net interface.

If you use Excel V5 or Access you
don't need anything beyond SQL*net and in your case DECnet. Excel V5 now includes a component product called MS-Query which is really the query engine from Access.

If you plan on using Excel V4 you can use the built-in Q+E interface to access Oracle as long as it is not Oracle V7. To use Excel V4 against Oracle V7 you need to upgrade the version of Q+E shipped with Excel to the full version of Pioneer's Q+E Database Editor V5. Oracle changed the names of the database catalog tables in V7 and broke 3rd party query tools. Since Microsoft was in the process of releasing Excel V5 with the Access query engine instead of Pioneer's Q+E product they never upgraded teh builtin version of Q+E to support Oracle V7.

Hope this helps more than it confuses.
