Clustering

Hello,
In Oracle (any version that you are aware of), suppose I cluster two relations based on a cluster key. That is, the cluster key is a single column common to both the relations.
As far as the users are concerned, this clustering is transparent to them and they access the tables as any other non-clustered table. Is there something called a CLUSTER_INDEX built on the cluster_key? What does it mean? How different is it from a normal index? Is it necessary to have this cluster_index?
