We went through this process last Spring. Previously we had been using Oracle 5 on PCs. It was dated and it cannot run at the time as Windows.
We chose a combination Quadbase/SQL and Microsoft Access. Quadbase/SQL is a great database engine with a simple interactive interface plus very easy C++ and Basic interfaces. Microsoft Access can read/update Quadbase databases and we use it as a front-end to Quadbase.
The network price for Quadbase/SQL is one tenth of Oracle with no significant difference in features. Quadbase has support for primary/foreign keys and outer joins which were lacking in Oracle 5.
Oracle as a company was not very friendly. Their SQL*Forms product is bad and difficult to use. The SQL is OK.
