Hi David,
This problem not only happens in your platform, it happens in the platform such as SUN, Sequent, Interactive Unix box as well.
The reason is that after shutting down te database, the RDBMS failed to 'close' all background processes. In many cases, you often find that the system monitor SMON is not closed.
Those unclosed background processes though are DEAD processes and they can be killed at the operating system level.
