select statement problems

        When I try to fill a column from a table that has no rows, my whole select statement will retrieve zero rows. This happens because my table that fills the column is joined to the whole select. Is there a way to do this? I have already tried an outer join, but my where statement throws the outer join off. I am selecting from either a view or a table. Thank you in advance.
