You can also access IMS databases from MVS "batch" jobs, or from TSO. To enable better access to IMS databases, and support SQL queries against IMS databases, several vendors offer "gateway" products, that often support a client-server paradigm making access from PC's and workstations possible.

Vendors of gateways include Information Builders (EDA-SQL), Computer Associates, and Oracle. IMS support is included in products like NOMAD and INGRES Star.
