I applied Frank Langelages' suggestion as well as braj's and the connect works, there are bugs in the application and faults in the makefile but those are my problems... There was no need to update the client. As far as I know anyway...
Just out of interest I wonder if there is a way to specify a default
SID in the tnsnames.ora ?
