SET_ITEM_INSTANCE_PROPERTY and FORMAT_MASK

I have a multi record block with a ‘Credit Card Number' field. I want to programmatically change the format mask of this field depending on the type of Credit Card.
SET_ITEM_INSTANCE_PROPERTY cannot change format masks. SET_ITEM_PROPERTY can but of course it changes every item in the block not just the current record so it won't work.
According to MetaLink there is an enhancement request (790105) filed on this issue and it's marked as "Suggestion Rejected". :-(
Is there any work arounds to get this functionality?
