Do You have an *index* on the column that is selected ? If not, it is clear that You have poor performance ... just one guess, as You do not provide more info.

One other possibility is a *Poplist* that is populated once
in the When-New-Form-Instance Trigger;
one problem may be eventual re-population, tough ...
