No response after 'alter database mount'

Hi,
I am one newbie of Oracle DBA and now I am in charge one old Oracle DB (Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Release 8.0.6.0.0 on solaris 8). After I ran 'startup nomount' in server manager line mode and continue with 'alter database mount'. There is no response any more. It looks dead and no SVRMGR> prompt returned.
Does anyone give me some hint or information on this? Your help will be very appreciated.
