Estimating correct degree of parallelism to use?

Hi, everyone. Are there some rules of thumb I can use to estimate the degree of parallelism I should use in a 'PARALLEL' query hint? Or is there perhaps a decent book you could recommend where I can go to read up on using the 'PARALLEL' hint?
