I have been in a similar situation.
By the time you get to Oracle, you have to have so much stuff under your belt, there are no complete beginners. You need to know:

- basic database design
- normalization
- relationship theory

and in all this learn SQL.
SQL appears to be difficult because of all the prerequisites.
