Problems with export (exp)

Hi!
I am trying to export a users objects using Export: Release 8.1.5.0.0, but it seems like I am having problems with my character sets as the attempts to export always end with:

. . exporting table TMP_EMAIL 2187 rows exported
. . exporting table TMP_PHONE 2060 rows exported
. exporting synonyms
EXP-00008: ORACLE error 6553 encountered ORA-06553: PLS-561: character set mismatch on value for parameter 'SHORTNAME'
EXP-00000: Export terminated unsuccessfully

I have tried with and without the NLS_LANG set, but with no luck. I have only been able to find a few notes on this problem, suggesting that one should change the character set. I have no idea how this I should be done or if it in fact will help. Any helping suggestions are more than welcome.
