configuring ODBC client

I'm trying to install and configure the Oracle 8.1i ODBC client on a windows 2000 computer.
My server is on solaris.
I have the TNS names file and I've set everything up but it does not want to connect.
I would appreciate some pointers...please respond to kossack80021_at_yahoo.com.
