How do you Trap for Error in XML and Stored Procs

How is error trapping done in: A client/server application web browser/database(stored procedure) done?
If a stored procedure that is creating XML code and returning the XML [Quoted] code to the browser and it gets an error (in the sql within the stored [Quoted] procedure). How is this error being returned to the browser... as XML? [Quoted] How do you know if it is indeed an error or if it its data?
