Thank you so much for your reply.
It's still bad luck however. The tnsnames.ora is indeed configured to fully qualify the SID so I'd think I don't need to add the domain name to the SID should I. It fails either way.
Should I place a copy of the tnsnames.ora file in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin as the older path would have it?
