A problems with BO reporting?

I made a report with Business Object. How can I use a wildcard, when prompt ask values?
I cut a part of a string like SubStr(<text>, 4, 10) and get result like: 05-05-1999, how can I tell to BO that this is actually a date? ToDate(SubStr(<text>, 4, 10),"dd-mm-yyyy") didn't do the trick. I need to compare two "Date"-strings together.
Help, please!
