Oracle Listener status

I'm running Oracle 7.3.2 on an Alpha box running OpenVMS 7.1. We're trying to think of a way to verify that the listener is up and running. The current "solutions" on the table are:

1 - Run a comfile redirecting the sys$output of LSNRTCL STATUS and then searching through the output for TNS errors.

2 - Somehow see if the process is communicating through the VMS port.

3 - Do a select on some data dictionary table to get the listener's status. ( I don't believe this data exists )

Any other ideas that we're missing ?
