pro*c and a date column

Does anyone hae a code snippet in pro*c for working with a date column. I would like to see how to define in C a Date type field and how to read/write from it. I am wondering also how you apply date functions to the bind variable. For example is I say Insert into x( a ) values :dt1
can dt1 point to a char arrya that has something like to_date( ..... ) ?
