I tend to split off my large tables (10G+) into separate LV's, just to make them easier to maintain and move around to get more balanced I/O. To be honest, with IBM SSA drives starting at a minimum of 4.5G in size, either approach would work on jfs. It's just that if you allocate all the space to a big jfs up front you don't leave yourself with many options...

I tend to use raw LV's on AIX, all of 1G size to make things simpler to manage. Large LV's make me nervous when it comes to backup/restore/reallocation.
