If this helps any, mutating is caused when you have several tables with associated triggers. Table A trigger updates Table B, Table B then has a trigger to re-update Table A, hence the mutating. It's a pain, but you have to go through all combinations of inserts and updates to see if triggers firing will eventually lead to the original table being updated again.
