Convert input in combox box to upper case.

I have a combox field (char type) in a form. Is there any way to convert the user input to upper case. I try :fieldname := upper(:fieldname) in WHEN-VALIDATE-ITEM but does not work. However, it is save as upper case string. Why is it not displayed as upper case.
