Forms 5.0 - list items v. LOV's

Why do list items, like poplists, have 2 columns in them? I just want a drop down of a few items. I know I can cheat, and specify the same column name twice in the record group I base the poplist on, but that seems hokey. I don't like to use LOV's for lists with about 20 items or less. Any help is appreciated.
