I've been working on a Oracle 7.3 materials tracking system developed in Power Objects for about two years, but I am interested in taking this application, or parts of it at least, to the internet via a browser interface for use by remote facilities of my company. I now face a dilemma: either I rewrite the application for Developer/2000 and Application Server, or I use the OPO plug-in for Netscape. I have studied the Internet Application Server enough to believe it will do all I want and more, but I may not need its robust, secure, and expensive solution. On the other hand, direct access to SQL*Net via the web seems like an open invitation to hackers and all other sorts of security and integrity nightmares.

Can anyone please relate to me experiences they may have had accessing an Oracle server directly from the internet? Is this a crazy security risk or a reasonable solution? Is there some other option I may have overlooked, such as a conversion utility from OPO to Developer/2000? Received on Wed May 06 1998 - 19:47:14 CEST
