The reason this and most other newsgroups are mercifully free of spam is due largely to the efforts of a group of volunteer sysadmins, who send out "cancels" for spam (the definition of spam being loosely agreed as sending the same message to many newsgroups). By some estimates as much as 40% of posts are spam.

Recently, these volunteers felt that some ISPs were getting complacent and not living up to their responsibilities (blocking spam at source, securing their routers from being used to "bounce" spam to disguise the source, etc) so they decided to take a break for a week or so to remind everybody what usenet would be like. The recent run of porno ads and MMFs is the result. It would have been much worse but not all of the volunteers agreed with the "standdown".

Rest assured, there are people out there who are expert in decyphering the origin of spam and complaining appropriately. Received on Fri Apr 24 1998 - 21:59:29 CEST
