They really have different audiences. I personally prefer the Developer/2000 advantages:

  • FIRST & FOREMOST - A DATABASE FRONT_END The database insert/update/replace functionality is "automagically" already there for you when you create your database forms. No toying with the evil empires stupid Visual Basic language re-inventing the wheel everywhere.
  • Multiple levels of parent/child (master/detail) tables are EASY to produce.
  • Very well integrated with Oracle!
  • Available on multiple platforms (always released first on NT these days though).

Visual Basic (as of v5) excels at:

  • FIRST & FOREMOST - A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE The Visual Basic language environment is better for non-database efforts. It is an easy-to-use programming language that happens to "do databases"
  • Easy to create (cringe) ActiveX clients & servers
  • Cheap ($$$)
