SQLLOAD record length question

I was attempting to load data with sqlload. I have encountered a problem loading data into a VARCHAR2(1000) field. My input record is about 550 bytes long. I get an error returned : Field in data file exceeded maximum specified length
Can I control the maximum length that sqload will use? Is it a field length problem or a line length problem ?
