Problem with smaller environments is a lack of opportunities. I was once considering a position in Tucson, AZ but decided that in this tough economy, NYC remains much safer environment. The company that I have worked for since 2006 went belly up last September. It would probably be much harder for me to find a new job in Kansas City then it was in NYC. That is why I am not going to leave the city anytime soon. If that reasoning applies to the other colleagues in the DBA trade, I imagine it could make recruiting a DBA much harder in Kansas City.
