...If you do a "ps -ef | grep smon" what does it show you?
oracle _at_ Homer /export/home/oracle/database>ps -ef | grep pmon oracle 1188 995 0 18:59:15 pts/3 0:00 grep pmon oracle _at_ Homer /export/home/oracle/database>
...
