Have you checked the alert_<SID>.log file?

If you run directly $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbshut with your oracle user, does the same happen?
And if you execute manually "shutdown immediate" in sqlplus after connecting with sqlplus "/ as sysdba" ? Received on Thu Jan 10 2008 - 09:32:08 CST
