No arguement here. The question just is, where's the advantage in the scenario I described? I see two disadvantages:

  1. Either the downtime is longer
  2. or I open up the (slim) chance of backing up the app in a not consistent state

As far as backup of just Oracle goes: Use RMAN! There's no reason not to use RMAN. But I need to backup more than Oracle - I need to bacckup some external "vault" (directory) as well.

Anyway, I really would like to use RMAN, as it improves the backup of Oracle quite some. The problem is with that external directory and this problem is not caused by RMAN or anything Oracle.

Fine. How would you go about making sure that the directory and the Oracle db are consistent?
