There are many advantages to RMAN for backing up your Oracle database. While not an exhaustive list, the advantages of RMAN include:

  1. Block level incremental backups
  2. Incrementally updated backups
  3. Block-level restore
  4. Ability to skip READ ONLY tablespaces
  5. Automatically backup the control file and SPFILE
  6. Ability to parallelize the backup
  7. Restartable backups
  8. Clone databases

Regular, user-managed hot and cold backups either cannot do the above, or have a very difficult time doing the above.

Please read the documentation again as all of these advantages are outlined there.
