I'll see what gives. Boss's gotta pay for this...

In the mean time - I do agree with you, and the documentation is clearly outdated. (searches in his beloved paper copy of 7.3): page 7-11 of the Oracle 7.3 concepts guide, released Feb 1996 uses the exact same words (and example).

It seems quite clear, the change since the introduction of deferrable constraints never made it to the documentation. - --
