I don't think that Sybrand was stating that your use of Oracle 8i is not for legitimate purposes, but rather that there is no legitimate reason to stay with Oracle 8i rather than upgrading to Oracle 9i or 10g, if you have an active Oracle maintenance agreement.

We are running two (slightly old) commerical applications that are certified to run on Oracle up to version 8.1.7.3. The company that produced one of the applications stated absolutely that the product would not work with Oracle 10g, and as a matter of fact the latest patch for Oracle 9.2 breaks all of the more recent versions of the application, except the latest release. The recycle bin in 10g causes significant problems for the most recent version of this commercial application, when new users are added to the system, drop dead errors such as "Getting an 'SYSADM.BIN$1Gs7x9eQSMigiXFLGDEGsA==$0' error" occur when permissions are attempted to be assigned to tables in the recycle bin. The suggestion by the company that produced the commercial application to fix this problem: delete from SYS.OBJ$ where name like 'BIN%' and name not like 'BINARY%'; Blindly upgrading to a new version of Oracle is not a good idea. We have been successfully running these two (slightly old) commerical applications that are certified to run on Oracle up to version 8.1.7.3 on 10.2.0.2 since April... There are legitimate reasons for staying still, and there are legitimate reasons for moving forward - find your comfort level.
