I agree with this statement. Count me in the camp of those who read both, but the manuals are, IMHO, totally underutilized not only as a reference, but as a comprehensive source of architecture. I have found myself on several occasions reading an "external" author, and thinking , "Wow, that is really well explained". I then pick up one of the manuals on the same subject, and think the same exact thing.

The bottom line is, read what works, for the version on which the *reader* is working.
