It is a BIG deal. Having 8-way interleave, instead of 16, can reduce the peak memory bandwidth by half. And you're running a database workload where memory bandwidth is critical (well, nowadays, many commercial workloads are either memory bandwidth bound or memory latency bound or both - no wonder UltraSPARC T1 performs well given its low latency and high peak bandwidth).
