Poor Backup Performance

I am running SAP R/3x200 on a 9.2.0.5 database. I perform a nightly backup to disk (SAN) of Prod and Dev systems, which run at different times, using SAP BRBACKUP which uses RMAN. The db sizes are 60G and 45G respectively. I am getting markedly different backup times for both systems. The times can vary from 40 mins - 5 hours for Dev, and 1 hour - 7 hours for Prod. The time taken to backup each 2G datafile is around 1-2 mins if running well, but can take up to 15 mins each. There is no pattern, over time, for the time taken per datafile for either instance. Both are seperate servers and dbs. I have ruled out the network as the cause, as it has completely changed from a 100Mb to 1G LAN, on different equipment, with no change to the general randomness of the backup times, except that is runs faster on the Gig Lan. The backups run through a completely private LAN via the second NIC. There are no network errors during backup, and no other background jobs in the db at that time, and there is zero user activity at these times.
Are there any known Oracle issues that relate to these symptoms? I have searched through the net without finding any similar problem or reference to it..
