well, CONNECT has not been deprecated in 10gR2, but a little bit history:

Oracle 7 admin guide:
http://tinyurl.com/943zc
These roles are provided for backward compatibility to earlier versions of Oracle

8i Administrator guide : http://tinyurl.com/9wcbe CONNECT, RESOURCE, DBA
Note: The previous three roles are provided to maintain compatibility with previous versions of Oracle and may not be created automatically in future versions of Oracle. Oracle Corporation recommends that you design your own roles for database security, rather than relying on these roles.

9i : same as 8i http://tinyurl.com/e37ou

10gR2 security guide : http://tinyurl.com/7lppw Both CONNECT and RESOURCE roles will be deprecated in future Oracle versions

also interresting in the new view : DBA_CONNECT_ROLE_GRANTEES helping you to get ride of that role.

cheers
