Oracle 9.2.0.1 and RAID5: Problem with creation of datafiles

When installing under RAID 5 we encountered a problem. As soon as we start creating the datafiles for our tablespaces (the datafiles are > 1GB) the server is not responding any more (Oracle software is already installed, there is other productive software running on the machine). We had to abort installation and REBOOT the server! (we ended up installing on another server)

The other oracle-database (not from us) on this machine has datafiles with a maximum size of 500MB - it seems, that they have split up the datafiles for one tablespace to several datafiles with 500MB size.

So is filesize really a problem under RAID5? We have no experience with RAID5 and don't have a test system with RAID5 where we can test things out.

Does someone know the reason for this behaviour? (i googled for this problem but did not find any clue)

Thanks
