Yes Umberto the approach you noted could be useable by some people in some environments.

However, if something unusual happens you have introduced a dependency between the procedures for falling back the database conversion that includes a recovery of the un-installed software.

For many people, that kind of dependency might not be acceptable.

Additionally, if you have more than one database instance on a unix host ( not unusual at all ) your scenario implies that you need to convert all of them at the same time. This again might not be acceptable to some people.
