No need to create another Oracle home.

Close cleanly and backup database
Backup old release (just in case)
Uninstall old release
Install new release in same Oracle home
Upgrade old-release database following release notes

As far as database is concerned, upgrade happens when you open it with the new release and follow the upgrade procedure (run scripts to take structures to the new release). There is no need to keep the old release around.

As usual, backup everyting, just in case... ;-)
